Slavik has been engaged in social work in the Kharkiv region since 2012 when he began serving at orphan summer camps and creating mentoring programs for orphans. In Ukraine, nearly all orphans are considered “social orphans”; their parents are still alive but unable to care for them due to poverty and addiction. After working with orphans for several years, Slavik and his team shifted their focus in hopes of addressing the systemic underlying causes of orphanhood by supporting families in crisis. In 2017, this transition led to the opening of the You Too family center in the Saltvika district of Kharkiv. Slavik is also the pastor of Kharkiv City Church.
Kharkiv has left a lasting impression on Heather. From 2009 to 2012, she went on six short-term mission trips working at orphan camps and orphanages in the region. In 2013, she moved to Kyiv where she worked as an Orphan Ministry Coordinator for two years. During this time, she befriended Slavik and partnered with him to care for Ukraine’s large orphaned population. Heather considers Ukraine her second home and has a passion for supporting local Ukrainian organizations in their work there. Heather is originally from Nashville, Tennessee where she currently resides with her husband, Paul and daughter, Emily.
